Welcome to White Cane Connections.

My name is Sue Boman. Yes, that’s me in the picture posted here. I have called this blog White Cane Connections because I am one of the many people who use a white cane. I began this blog because I wanted to write about a project I undertook in 2012. The plan was to complete a series of walks using my white cane. Between March and September, I walked in 82 different locations across Canada. So, the blog begins by telling of my experiences and the many people I met along the way.

While this particular journey has now been completed, I find that I still have much to write about. I am continuing to make new white cane connections, and so for the time being I will continue to add regular posts to this blog. I am hoping that you will be a partner in the journey.

May 2 - The Bright Side of Life

I like the tune and the philosophy of looking on the bright side of life. We all come across bumps in the road, but how we react to those unexpected bumps says a lot about ourselves. Sometimes it’s hard to focus on positive outcomes. In my own life, I try to make it a habit to intentionally look on the bright side.

Today at our local support group meeting for people with vision loss, we had a guest speaker. Wendy Edey spoke to the group about developing good mental health. Although she geared her talk to suit people with sight challenges, the topic could be adapted to any group of people. We all come across times when life throws us a curve ball and we need to learn how to catch or bat the ball and continue with the game. Wendy talked about some helpful strategies in doing this.

Currently Wendy is working for CNIB as a clinical counsellor. She has been nearly blind since birth and like all of us, has come across times in her life which she described as “times of testing”. Wendy approaches life with a positive attitude and a sense of humour. When things go wrong, she tries to draw on memories of happy times to get herself through any rough spells.

Wendy’s message encourages us to embrace hope and optimism. For other pearls of wisdom, you might be interested in checking out some of the posts on Wendy’s blog. If you also want to check out Wendy’s sense of humour, you might read the post titled Wet Floors.

Following is a picture taken of Wendy at the meeting this afternoon. Wendy’s presentation was a great way to start May, the month promoted by CNIB as Vision Health Month.
