Welcome to White Cane Connections.

My name is Sue Boman. Yes, that’s me in the picture posted here. I have called this blog White Cane Connections because I am one of the many people who use a white cane. I began this blog because I wanted to write about a project I undertook in 2012. The plan was to complete a series of walks using my white cane. Between March and September, I walked in 82 different locations across Canada. So, the blog begins by telling of my experiences and the many people I met along the way.

While this particular journey has now been completed, I find that I still have much to write about. I am continuing to make new white cane connections, and so for the time being I will continue to add regular posts to this blog. I am hoping that you will be a partner in the journey.

November 6 - Iowa in the Fall

This past weekend Lyle and I flew to Minneapolis for a family wedding. Lyle is of Swedish descent but in the early part of the last century his grandfather migrated from Sweden to Iowa. Some of the family still live in that region. It was fun to reconnect with them for the wedding celebration.

While some of the family have moved north to Minnesota, one branch still lives in Forest City, Iowa. RV enthusiasts might recognize Forest City as the home of Winnebago. The factory is open for public tours from early spring to late fall. When we visit there, Lyle enjoys going on the tour.

I don’t have quite as much interest in the tour. There are steps and mesh walkways inside the factory and I find that I am more cautious about where I am walking than I am interested in the factory production line. On the other hand, I do enjoy walking along the trails beside the Winnebago River. I was pleased this year to discover that since our last visit to the area, the trail had been paved. What a great place to walk.  The path was wide and smooth and I almost didn’t need to use my cane. The time of year was perfect – blue sky, green grass and trees with branches windswept of their leaves. Without the leafy branches casting shadows it was somewhat easier for me to see the path.

Lyle took the following picture of me by the river. I am wearing a jacket. In spite of the sunshine, the temperature was a bit brisk.
