Welcome to White Cane Connections.

My name is Sue Boman. Yes, that’s me in the picture posted here. I have called this blog White Cane Connections because I am one of the many people who use a white cane. I began this blog because I wanted to write about a project I undertook in 2012. The plan was to complete a series of walks using my white cane. Between March and September, I walked in 82 different locations across Canada. So, the blog begins by telling of my experiences and the many people I met along the way.

While this particular journey has now been completed, I find that I still have much to write about. I am continuing to make new white cane connections, and so for the time being I will continue to add regular posts to this blog. I am hoping that you will be a partner in the journey.

May 1 - Birthday Celebration

This past week it was my birthday and I had a really lovely day. It wasn’t a special birthday number but with the COVID–19 restrictions, I think that friends and family went out of their way to make my birthday a memorable occasion.

I began the day with well wishes on email and then, after breakfast there were multiple phone calls. I had a video chat with our granddaughter and her parents, and in a phone call from our son and his wife, I heard our three-year old grandson sing Happy Birthday to me.

At noon, Lyle disappeared downtown and came home with a lovely floral arrangement. This was quite the surprise. I had thought that the florists were closed but apparently orders could still be taken for curbside pickup and this is exactly what Lyle had arranged.

The afternoon was especially enjoyable. Three friends had organized a coffee party in our driveway. They each brought their own lawn chairs and coffee and we sat outside with the appropriate social distance between us. Shirley had baked little treats which she passed around on individual prewrapped plates. The weather was a little on the cooler side but we sat outside for at least 1½ hours so I guess that it wasn’t all that bad! After a month of self-isolation, it was so good to see people.

While my own day was quite delightful, my little celebration made me more aware of the impact the social distancing restrictions have had on others. I am fully aware that other people have needed to change and alter plans for occasions that are far more significant than my one day birthday celebration. My heart goes out to you all. In the meantime, as we continually hear on TV, we must endeavour to stay connected as we also stay apart.

There are two pictures with this post. They were both taken outside in our driveway. The first shows myself with three friends on our separated lawn chairs. The second is of my flowers. I took the flowers outside with me to add to the birthday celebration.
