Welcome to White Cane Connections.

My name is Sue Boman. Yes, that’s me in the picture posted here. I have called this blog White Cane Connections because I am one of the many people who use a white cane. I began this blog because I wanted to write about a project I undertook in 2012. The plan was to complete a series of walks using my white cane. Between March and September, I walked in 82 different locations across Canada. So, the blog begins by telling of my experiences and the many people I met along the way.

While this particular journey has now been completed, I find that I still have much to write about. I am continuing to make new white cane connections, and so for the time being I will continue to add regular posts to this blog. I am hoping that you will be a partner in the journey.

August 2 - Pinery Provincial Park, ON

Lyle and I spent the last two days at Pinery Provincial Park north of London along Lake Huron. The park was also the spot for our latest walk. Would you believe that we are now at walk number fifty! The trail was gravel, but the gravel was packed down and so was a relatively smooth surface for my cane.

Yesterday’s walk was special in another way as well. Our daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Andrew had flown into London for a wedding. They arrived a day early and so walked with us at the Pinery. Jen and Andrew had joined us on April 21 for the walk in Calgary, so it really was a special treat to have them with us again.

I am posting a picture of Andrew here. As well as being my son-in-law, Andrew is the technical expert on this blog. I am grateful to him not only for his expertise, but also for his encouragement with my endeavour.

A great picture of Andrew!!! So glad 'the kids' could be with you for another walk.

Sue, you are on my mind much, as you know. And now during the Olympics your walking has taken on another dimension in my mind.

What you are doing is also medal material. Many athletes have a bigger picture than the prize. The comments by Clara Hughes and her story is one example. How the athletes know that they represent their country and that they can influence others. And you also are having a positive influence on many people, as you represent the people with vision loss and share your stories. Those are examples that encourage all of us. God bless your every stride and every conversation as you continue east. Love, Alva.

About Me

My given name is actually Susan, but most people call me Sue. I was born in Sydney, Australia but have lived for most of my adult life in Canada. It was here that I met Lyle, my husband of 35 years. Our daughter, Jennifer is married and lives in Calgary, and our son, Jonathan is married and living in Winnipeg.

I came to Canada as an elementary teacher. After nearly twenty years of wonderful teaching experiences my eyesight changed and I was diagnosed as being legally blind. I became a client of CNIB (The Canadian National Institute for the Blind), and I began to explore other options as I could no longer function in the classroom. I became more involved with adult education.

I have written four books, the last two being about vision challenges and blindness. Copies of these books are in numerous libraries from British Columbia to Ontario. I think of my books as being motivational as well as informative.

The latest two titles are:

Over the years, I have given author presentations in numerous libraries. I have given these on a variety of topics ranging from Coping with Vision Loss to Tips for Aspiring Writers. I have also made presentations to other community groups on the subject of vision loss.

In 2004, I was the recipient of the Euclid Herie Award for Leadership. This award is presented annually to an Albertan who is either blind or legally blind and who has displayed qualities of leadership in his/her community. I continue to facilitate a monthly support group in my local area.

I am a firm believer in life long learning. In 2006, I achieved my MAIS degree (Master of Arts in Integrated Studies) through Athabasca University. I was honoured when I was asked to give the valedictorian address at the convocation ceremony.

I always feel ready to address new challenges in life and that is the reason for my symbolic cross-country trek this year. I am hoping that my series of walks will promote an awareness of white cane users and the special needs of people who are either blind or partially sighted.
