Welcome to White Cane Connections.

My name is Sue Boman. Yes, that’s me in the picture posted here. I have called this blog White Cane Connections because I am one of the many people who use a white cane. I began this blog because I wanted to write about a project I undertook in 2012. The plan was to complete a series of walks using my white cane. Between March and September, I walked in 82 different locations across Canada. So, the blog begins by telling of my experiences and the many people I met along the way.

While this particular journey has now been completed, I find that I still have much to write about. I am continuing to make new white cane connections, and so for the time being I will continue to add regular posts to this blog. I am hoping that you will be a partner in the journey.

August 21 - Granby & Sherbrooke, QC

Lyle and I are in Quebec! Our first stop in this province was in Granby. We had chosen Chez Cora as our start point because the restaurant was part of a chain that our son and daughter-in-law had taken us to in Winnipeg. Also, there was a specific address that we could enter on our GPS. We didn’t realize until we arrived that the address was in a large shopping centre. I find parking lots of this kind quite difficult to traverse. They are so unpredictable as far as the location of sidewalks, pedestrian crosswalks, dividers with trees and other shrubberies, to say nothing of vehicles moving in and out. We did walk around the area, but I’m glad that Lyle was there to act as my guide.

From here we moved on to Sherbrooke. As per a suggestion from our daughter’s friend, Corrine, we chose a 4 km pathway around the lake in the centre of the city. It was very, very pleasant. The path was wide, mostly paved, and well looked after. Even though we walked at seven in the evening, there were still many people walking, biking and rollerblading. Lyle said that there were lights around the path also, so I imagine that it would be well used even into the later evening hours. For us, it was a very enjoyable way finish to the day.
