Welcome to White Cane Connections.

My name is Sue Boman. Yes, that’s me in the picture posted here. I have called this blog White Cane Connections because I am one of the many people who use a white cane. I began this blog because I wanted to write about a project I undertook in 2012. The plan was to complete a series of walks using my white cane. Between March and September, I walked in 82 different locations across Canada. So, the blog begins by telling of my experiences and the many people I met along the way.

While this particular journey has now been completed, I find that I still have much to write about. I am continuing to make new white cane connections, and so for the time being I will continue to add regular posts to this blog. I am hoping that you will be a partner in the journey.

August 10 - Siena

What I liked about Siena:

1.  I liked the fact that our hotel was just across the road from five sets of escalators leading up inside the city wall to the historic city centre. Without these escalators, there would be well over 200 steps to get to the top.

2. I liked the anchovy and tomato open faced sandwich that I had for lunch.

3. I liked that the very old stone buildings were also very tall and cast a shadow over the narrow streets. Walking in the shade through this medieval hilltop city was far more comfortable than under the glare of the fierce Italian summer sun.

4. I was awed by the enormously high ceiling of the San Francesco Bascillica and the incredibly ornate facade of the Duomo.

5. I liked Il Campo, the square in front of City Hall.  The square was an oval shape.  Next weekend there will be a horse race around the square.  Today the track was being prepared with hard packed sandy clay, the colour of burnt sienna.

6. ...and this is a highlight!  I really liked the fact that we were able to find a modern laundromat.  We now have clean clothes!
